Summits

Our Steering Committee understood from the beginning that engagement was key to success. To build a ten-year climate adaptation and mitigation plan for the Vancouver Island and Coastal Communities region, to address the gaps identified in the research, and to support local governments, communities and First Nations to prepare for the future, we needed full participation.

Accordingly, we've held online summits to hear from elected officials and staff members from local governments and youth about their priorities and goals for climate action across this region.

Both summits included some Indigenous involvement. However, given the urgent imperative of advancing decolonization, and recognizing First Nations' relationships with these lands and waters from time immemorial, we have subsequently paused the planning process. This is to learn about First Nations' existing actions and priorities and to establish a foundation for working together going forward.

We are currently working with Alderhill, an Indigenous-led consultancy based on Vancouver Island, to advance this work.

In November 2020, we hosted a day-long Community Resilience Summit for locally elected officials and staff, First Nations and BC government officials. With 150 people online, it was day of inspiring action-oriented workshops to help develop a Climate Action and Resilience Plan to 2030 for the island and coastal communities.

In the spring of 2021, we held a day-long Youth Climate Summit to bring together youth between the ages of 13-26 to collaborate on visions, goals, and actions for the region.
